Hair & Scalp Conditions
At Renova Hair, we are committed to understanding and addressing the unique concerns of each individual experiencing hair loss or scalp issues. Our experienced team of doctors and trichologists offers specialized care tailored to a range of conditions affecting hair and scalp health. Below, we outline some of the most common conditions we treat and how our comprehensive solutions can help restore your hair and confidence.
Hair Loss Conditions
Androgenetic Alopecia (Male and Female Pattern Baldness)
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss, affecting both men and women. In men, it often results in a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, while women may experience more diffuse thinning across the scalp.
Causes: This condition is primarily caused by genetics and hormonal changes, particularly sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which can shrink hair follicles and lead to gradual hair loss.
Treatment Options: At Renova Hair, we offer advanced treatments for androgenetic alopecia, including:
- Hair Transplant Surgery (FUE & FUT)
- Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
- Prescription Medications such as minoxidil and finasteride
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, resulting in small, round patches of hair loss. In severe cases, it can lead to total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).
Causes: The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to be linked to genetics and environmental factors.
Treatment Options: Renova Hair provides several cutting-edge solutions, including:
- Corticosteroid Injections
- Topical Immunotherapy
- PRP Therapy to stimulate follicle activity
Traction Alopecia
This condition results from prolonged tension on the hair due to certain hairstyles, such as tight braids, ponytails, or extensions. Over time, it can cause thinning or permanent hair loss along the hairline.
Causes: Repetitive stress or tension on the scalp from hairstyling practices.
Treatment Options: Preventive and restorative care includes:
- Lifestyle and Styling Guidance
- Non-Surgical Treatments like LLLT or PRP to encourage regrowth
- Hair Transplantation for permanent restoration in severe cases
Scalp Conditions
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic scalp condition characterized by redness, flakiness, and itchy skin, often leading to dandruff. In some cases, this inflammation can contribute to hair thinning.
Causes: It can be triggered by factors like stress, genetics, or an overgrowth of yeast on the skin.
Treatment Options: We offer solutions that include:
- Medicated Shampoos and Topical Treatments to reduce inflammation and control symptoms
- Anti-fungal Treatments
- Customized Scalp Care Regimens to maintain long-term scalp health
Folliculitis
Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to bacterial or fungal infections, leading to small, itchy bumps or pustules on the scalp. If left untreated, it can cause scarring and hair loss.
Causes: Bacterial, fungal, or viral infections, irritation from shaving or hair removal, or friction from tight hats or helmets.
Treatment Options: We provide a range of treatments to address folliculitis, including:
- Antibiotic or Antifungal Medications
- Medicated Scalp Washes
- PRP Therapy for scalp rejuvenation in severe cases
Scalp Eczema
Scalp eczema causes red, inflamed, and itchy patches on the scalp. It can lead to hair thinning due to persistent scratching and irritation.
Causes: Often linked to allergies, asthma, or other atopic conditions, scalp eczema can flare up due to environmental triggers.
Treatment Options: Renova Hair provides relief through:
- Moisturizing Scalp Treatments
- Steroid and Non-Steroid Topical Medications
- Lifestyle Advice to minimize flare-ups

How long does a hair transplant procedure take?
The duration of your hair transplant will depend on the number of grafts needed for a full head of hair. Minor procedures may be completed in a matter of 3-4 hours, while larger procedures may last up to 6-7 hours. During a procedure, clients can watch TV, listen to music, or read a magazine. You may also take breaks throughout a hair transplant.
What happens during your hair transplant procedure?
A hair transplant extracts healthy hair follicles from the ‘permanent donor area’ of the scalp. It then places them in a ‘temporary recipient area’ that is losing hair. It is done under local anaesthetic. A surgeon and two technicians, who support the surgeon, perform it.
Patients will spend the first period of the day face-down. A surgeon will remove hair follicles with a microscopic, electric punch. They then spend the second part of the day face up. Cartridge injectors implant extracted follicles into a natural hair pattern in and around their crown, hairline, and temples.
Is a hair transplant procedure painful?
Hair transplants use local anaesthetic. So, clients feel no pain during or after the procedure. The first and second anaesthetic injections may cause slight discomfort. However, this discomfort soon fades. Clients feel no pain after that. Many report their hair transplant procedure to be a relaxing affair.
When will I see the results of my transplant?
Hair begins to regrow after a transplant at different stages for different clients. Many will have a short dormant period after their hair transplant. During this time, the hair follicles will rest. They will find nutrition by attaching to the scalp’s blood and nerve supply. Hair follicles will likely shed their hair during this time. Then, new hair will regrow from the follicle bulb. This shedding process is nothing that should cause alarm.
How much do hair transplants cost?
The price of your hair transplant will depend on how many follicles you need to transplant. We’ll know the final fee after we examine your hair. We’ll check how many follicles are needed to cover your crown, hairline, and above your temples.
However, we can reduce the number of follicles and the cost of hair transplants with medication and laser therapy. On average, Renova Hair’s hair transplants cost as little as £3,500 through to £6,000+. The price is always dependent on the type of procedure, hair type, duration, and quantity. For an accurate cost, please book a consultation with our team.
What are the side effects of a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is generally safe. But, like any medical procedure, it can have some side effects. Common ones include:
- Swelling and Redness: Mild swelling and redness around the forehead and transplant area are common. They usually subside within a few days.
- Itching: You might feel itching in both the donor and recipient areas. Medication or good scalp care can help ease this discomfort.
- Scabbing and Crusting: Tiny scabs may form on the transplanted areas. They usually heal within 7-10 days.
- Temporary Hair Shedding: Known as “shock loss,” this is when transplanted hair falls out before new growth begins. It’s a normal part of the process and is temporary.
- Pain or Discomfort: Some people may feel mild pain or discomfort in the scalp, which can be managed with prescribed pain relief.
- Infection or Scarring: While rare, there is a small risk of infection or scarring. Following post-procedure care instructions reduces this risk significantly.
At Renova Hair, we provide aftercare instructions and support. This minimises side effects and ensures a smooth recovery.
